Meetings Aren’t the Problem. You Are.
How to stop wasting everyone’s time without canceling the whole calendar.
We love blaming meetings.
Too many. Too long. Too pointless.
And ok, fair. Some meetings are soul-crushing.
But here’s the real issue: Meetings just expose your leadership habits.
If you’re vague with goals, the meeting will be too.
If you interrupt, dominate, or drift - so will the team.
If you let things slide, guess what? They slide.
It’s not the meeting’s fault. It’s yours.
So here’s how to make meetings suck less:
Have one clear goal.
Not five. Not “brainstorming vibes.” One decision, plan, or outcome.Size the guest list.
Ask: who actually needs to talk? Don’t CC the world just in case.Use time like money.
Start on time. End early if possible. Don’t ramble just because the calendar says 30 minutes.Don’t save your thoughts for the meeting.
Write updates or ideas ahead of time. That way meetings are for discussions, not status reading.Invite quiet voices in.
If you’re leading, it’s your job to pull people in. Especially the ones who won’t fight to be heard.
A good meeting = Clear purpose
Right people. Respect for time. And a leader who doesn’t wing it.
If your meetings suck, canceling them won’t fix the real issue.
Changing how you lead them will.
